Give your balcony a new life: ideas for small and large spaces

A balcony can be much more than the place where the clothes airer lives. With a little creativity it can become a rest zone, a summer breakfast spot, a green oasis or even a home office. Whether yours is small or large, here are some useful and inspiring ideas for getting the most out of it.

1. Seating: comfortable but practical

Bean bags are comfortable and eye-catching, but on a small balcony they easily eat up the space. Choose compact or folding garden furniture instead: two stackable chairs and a small table are enough to let you sip your morning coffee in the fresh air. Rattan, metal and wooden sets are all available, depending on the style you want.

2. Comfort extras: cushions, throws, mood lighting

Even a simple balcony becomes intimate with a few soft cushions, an outdoor throw or a warm-toned LED lamp. Colours and textures make the seating personal, and they let you use the space even when the weather turns cooler.

3. Working outdoors? Yes!

If you work from home it is worth making use of the balcony during the summer months: a fold-down table and a portable laptop stand are enough to let you work in sunlight and fresh air. Being close to nature makes you more creative, and sunshine gives you energy.

4. Shade and privacy

Good shading filters out not only the sun but also curious eyes. You can choose a fabric sail, a blind, or a reed or bamboo privacy screen — all easy to fit and a neat way of closing off the space.

5. A small renovation, a big change

A fresh coat of paint on the railing or the balcony wall can improve the overall effect dramatically. Don’t be afraid of colour! A light wall or an interesting stripe of exterior paint instantly creates a new mood.

6. Plants — the heart of the balcony

Plants are, of course, essential. Whether you plant herbs, flowers or vegetables, they make the space feel alive and welcoming. From geraniums to sweet potato vines, from citronella to hibiscus, there are plenty of varieties that tolerate sun well and need little care.

Bonus tip: creative upcycling

An old ladder as a plant stand, a wine rack for herbs, or a tired wooden table given a new coat of paint: don’t be afraid to experiment with reused furniture to create a distinctive, personal atmosphere.
